Feeling Peckish is my first magpie painting and I can't even tell you how many years it's in been in my mind. (Actually, it's my second, because I painted it first (on the same day) in my sketchbook!).
 
Many years ago, we developed a strong bond with some local magpies. What started with us offering a little snack in the hopes they'd see us as friends and therefore wouldn't attack our family, ended in a daily ritual of meeting our new buddies at the front door. It didn't take long for the magpies to feel so safe with us that they'd peer through our front door every morning, babies in tow, awaiting their treat. 
 
I must admit, there were days where I felt a little overwhelmed trying to get myself ready for work, two kids ready for school, take care of the dog and stop everything because the magpies were here and I recall thinking it may have been easier to get attacked! But deep down, I loved this new connection we'd made and it was only severed when we moved out and the house was torn down. 
 
Whilst I do have some photos of our winged buddies (which I took years ago with the intention of painting them), this particular magpie in Feeling Peckish is one I snapped a couple of months ago on a morning walk. She let me take the photo, so I have wondered if it's possible she recognized me, though I doubt I'll ever know. My eye for detail isn't that good!
